The National:

LAST night’s scenes in Washington were terrifying and disturbing. They were the result of the electorate being lied to for years by Trump and other senior Republicans – they truly believe, without a shred of evidence, that the election was rigged.

Now 45% of Republicans support the storming of the Capitol and more than half of them blame Joe Biden for the outcome. That’s the world we’re living in.

It goes to show what a terribly divided country Trump has nurtured during his time in office.

This morning we remembered. Didn’t our own wonderful leader say Trump deserved a Nobel Peace Prize?

Yes, he did. In 2018 the then foreign secretary made the case for Trump to win the award, previously received by the likes of Malala Yousafzai and Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

And nobody can argue that the US wasn’t a horribly divided country in 2018 either. This was a year after Charlottesville, when Trump praised the very fine people on both sides.

Johnson made his comments in Washington in 2018 as he appealed to Trump not to abanon the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran.

"If Trump can fix North Korea and the Iran nuclear deal then I don’t see why he’s any less of a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize than Barack Obama,” he told Sky.

He said Obama won his award “before he even did anything”.

Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”.

If Johnson’s praise for Trump’s peace-keeping abilities is anything to go by, the man’s judgement is extremely concerning.

What’s next? A science award for lockdown sceptics? A unity prize for Nigel Farage?

Johnson is making decisions on our behalf. That is scary, scary stuff.
