THE judges for the first-ever independence awards have come to a decision – and you can find out who’s won on Wednesday night.

The Independence Awards scheme, a collaboration between The National and the Scottish Independence Foundation (SIF), aims to recognise the achievements of individuals and groups who have been working for the cause of Scottish independence.

Earlier this month, we invited people from across the Yes movement to place nominations for those who they felt deserve some recognition for their campaigning activities.

Following the closing date for submissions on December 16, judges have reflected on a wide range of achievements accomplished through tireless efforts from within the movement. Their decisions will be unveiled at Wednesday’s event, set to be broadcast live on The National’s Facebook page.

Compered by Elaine C Smith, the event will also see SIF convener Dr Willie Wilson and National editor Callum Baird giving a brief outline of how we are all working towards our common destiny in the form of achieving independence.

Elaine will then announce the winners of the two categories – the Indy Campaigner of the Year and the Indy Group of the Year.

The winner of the individual campaigner award will receive £1500 and a trophy, while the winning group will get £1000 and a trophy.

The money is set to be donated to a pro-independence group or project of the winner’s choice.

The recipient of the donations will also need to be compatible with SIF’s aims, including education or training of activists, design/production of materials, or running events.

SIF chief executive Greg McCarra said: “Even the last nine months of Covid have not dampened the enthusiasm for independence ... It is time for that enthusiasm to be recognised and rewarded.”
