AN independence supporting folk/pop duo have released a new festive song and video with the aim of bringing some cheer to this year’s Covid Christmas.
Brothers Iain and Andrew Mundy started out as a duo called Braw at the beginning of 2019, becoming a familiar sight at independence marches before the lockdown.
Their first song Home from Home was shared round independence groups and featured lyrics by Iain’s wife, Steph, who wrote of her experience of moving from England to Scotland.
“It’s about how she feels accepted and the sense of pride that Scotland has that England doesn’t seem to have and that she wishes it did,” he said.
Braw’s second single, Whisky in Hand, reached number 65 in the Scottish Singles Chart, number 50 in the iTunes chart and was also played on BBC Radio Scotland’s Afternoon Show.
They are regular contributors to IndyLive Radio and one of their more high profile followers on Instagram is First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who saw them at the Bungo in the Back Lane festival in Strathbungo last year.
“We had just finished the set and they managed to get her on stage to sing Caledonia – she was really good and drew quite a crowd,” said Iain. “She has followed us on Instagram since then so we are happy with that!”
The duo has now released their first festive single, A Glimpse of Christmas, featuring a special B-side cover of O Holy Night with a debut album planned for early next year.
“We’ve also put together a music video which features clips from family and friends, showing how we can all enjoy this unusual Christmas in our own special ways,” said Iain.
The brothers are keen to get involved with as many independence events as possible and have pledged to be back out supporting the cause whenever Covid allows. Iain, who is originally from Pathhead and now lives in Glasgow, was studying music in Manchester when the first independence referendum was held. “It was funny down there, to be honest, as no one really understood what it was about but everyone had an opinion so it was a tricky time,” he said.
“The English media just assumes we can’t do it and portrays it as Scottish nationalists hating the English and it is not about that – my wife is English for goodness’ sake. We are keen to start campaigning next year to build up momentum for the next referendum.”
A Glimpse of Christmas is available from the iTunes store and the video can be seen at Braw’s Facebook page.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
