SHOPPERS are being called on to support their local high streets and retailers this Christmas, keeping money in their community and giving a much-needed boost to the local economy.
Buy Angus, led by Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce (DACC) and Angus Council, is putting the spotlight on the diverse range of independent retailers.
Montrose-based, Sup2summit specialises in stand up paddle boarding, bushcraft and rock climbing.
Sup2summit owner, Jim Wight, said: “More people enjoying the great outdoors has been one of the good things to come out of 2020 and we hope as restriction begin to lift Scots will appreciate they can experience a wide range activities right here in their own country, a backdrop people the world over envy.
“Spending with small independent businesses this Christmas, whether on a tangible gift or a gift voucher is a killer combination – it supports the local economy rather than the multinational chains, while also finding original gifts that aren’t
mass-produced.”
Alison Henderson, DACC chief executive, said: “Keeping any business afloat over the last six months has been a huge challenge but especially so for retailers across Scotland who were forced to close their doors at times. However, the resilience, tenacity and creativity we’ve seen from independent traders has been truly inspirational. So many have adapted their business, product lines and services to ensure a local shopping experience is there to support their customers.”
As well as extending opening hours, increasing browsing space and creating a delivery service, many retailers have increased or launched their digital presence with online shopping options, such as Redcastle Gin who are offering facetime shopping appointments.
Henderson added: “We’re calling on shoppers to keep their festive spend in the local economy, whether that’s at events such as Farmer’s Markets, via websites or Facebook pages or physically going along to the shops. With such a wide range of retailer across Scotland, from artisan food producers and furniture makers to talented jewellers and artists, there is something for everyone and if ever there was a time to show support, this is it.”
