A VIRTUAL event at one of Edinburgh’s leading galleries is a true family affair as mother and son artists Frances Macdonald and Ross Ryan look at the harsh natural conditions we endure – especially during this year’s health crisis.

Their joint exhibition A Family Affair, at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, explores the landscape of Scotland’s islands and west coast, using oils and other media, capturing the fleeting effects and drama of changing weather.

They also share Crinan, where the Ryan family have run the Crinan Hotel since the mid-1970s, before Ross left for school and art school, eventually being drawn back by the beauty of Argyll.

Running concurrently is Menagerie, an exhibition of new works by Mark Hearld who also takes inspiration from the natural world, especially flora, fauna and wildlife. The joint exhibitions open on November 28.
