AN online auction spanning 150 years of Scottish art history opens for bidding today, running until November 17.

Following the success of Samuel John Peploe’s Still Life with Tulips and Fan, which sold for £675,000, this Sotheby’s auction features more work by Peploe, alongside a selection by other Scottish colourists.

Showcasing Peploe’s extensive range of subjects and styles, these paintings trace his career from early elegant still lifes, captivating views of Iona (above), Scottish landscapes inspired by Cezanne to his masterful still life arrangements of the 1920s (inset).

Several works are coming from private Scottish collections, while others have not been seen for decades. Overall, over two-thirds of all the lots are making their first appearance at auction.

Other Scottish artists featured include FCB Cadell, George Leslie Hunter and JD Fergusson.

Another highlight is an Arthur Melville watercolour. A centrepiece of the 2015 National Galleries of Scotland monograph exhibition, it has been held in the same family since it was painted in the late 19th century.
