COUNCILLORS have approved plans for two whisky distilleries to be built as part of a £40 million complex in the Borders.

The development was previously approved by Scottish Borders Council but permission lapsed and approval was sought for a second time.

The development would be based at the former Jedforest Hotel, located south of Jedburgh. According to developers, the complex could create up to 70 full-time jobs in the area.

The committee unanimously agreed to give the development fresh approval, with East Berwickshire representative Jim Fullarton describing it as a “fantastic opportunity” to bring a visitor attraction to the area.

Mid-Berwickshire’s Donald Moffat added: "I think it is great that we can have rural diversification of this type.

"This will be a destination that people will want to come to and want to visit."

The first phase of the development would see a small distillery, designed to educate visitor in the “craft of making spirit”, built.

After that a larger distillery – capable of producing millions of bottles every year – would be completed.
