I WAS very interested to read the letter from Robert MacLachlan (Do we have a complete picture of this virus’s symptoms?, September 26). On the evening of Saturday March 14 I came home early from a night out with my wife feeling slightly under par. For the preceding few days I had felt vaguely “fluey”, suffering mild diarrhoea, a feeling that I might be developing a sore throat, a slightly “fuzzy” head, and nipping eyes.

The other symptoms cleared up quickly but the nipping eyes and fuzzy head have persisted ever since, and soreness in a couple of my joints seems to have spread to them all. I have had a succession of eyedrops and ointments prescribed by various doctors and opticians; not forgetting a “hot mask” which cost me £20. None of it has made the slightest bit of difference.

I am currently waiting for the results of a battery of blood tests taken a fortnight ago. Suggestions from me that I might have some sort of hangover from a mild dose of coronavirus have only evoked polite amusement.

It seems odd to me that I should suddenly begin suffering irritated eyes when I never had any such problem before, and that this has persisted for six months in spite of everything a bunch of highly qualified professionals can throw at it. Is it really just coincidence that this began at the same time as coronavirus began to make its presence felt in Scotland? Will I ever know if that’s what I had? And how many other people in the country are also suffering from mysterious eye problems?

THE letter from Robert Mac Lachlan lists an interesting range of symptoms. If I had these I would assume that I had a slight cold, but most of his ailments I would deal with by drinking water. Dry eyes, coughs, irregular bowels and blocked nose are related to mucus membranes, which like to be wet. For the cold, try oranges for Vitamin C and fish oil for D, as were issued by the government during World War Two. Personally to fight infection I eat raw garlic (as used by the Vikings) for zinc and Brazil nuts for selenium.
