ABERDEEN will go into local lockdown as a result of increasing coronavirus cases in the area, the First Minister has announced.

Nicola Sturgeon said city council leaders had agreed to the measures which come into force today.

She said the decision had not been taken lightly but extreme caution is necessary to contain the outbreak and prevent further harm.

It comes as Scotland recorded 64 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest number for several weeks.

In Aberdeen there has been a cluster of cases linked to The Hawthorn Bar.

Sturgeon said that 191 contacts have been traced in relation to the cluster.

She said that the rise in cases has contributed to a greater fear there was a “significant outbreak” in the city.

According to the First Minister, more than 20 other pubs and restaurants are involved in the cluster.

The main new restrictions announced by the First Minister included: People in Aberdeen should not travel more than five miles for recreation.

Those not in Aberdeen are being advised not to travel there.

Pubs, restaurants must close from 5pm.

People in Aberdeen should not go into other people’s homes (except for those in extended household groups - ( People can form "extended household groups" with one other household if they live on their own or with children under the age of 18.)
