Athletics: The Impossible Games (BBC2, 2.15pm)

LIVE sport is starting to make a comeback, but it’s required some creative thinking on the part of the organisers and competitors. That’s how we’ve got this unique event, which is being hosted by Oslo – all though that’s not where all the athletes are.

Behind closed doors at the iconic Bislett Stadium (there are still no crowds allowed), pole vaulter Armand Duplantis and sprint hurdler Karsten Warholm will attempt to break new world records while Norway’s Ingebrigtsen brothers will compete in the 1000m and 2000m. There will also be more track and field events taking place simultaneously in other countries, as some of the world’s biggest stars get back to competing. Steve Cram provides the commentary.

Great Paintings of the World with Andrew Marr (C5, 8.15pm)

THE broadcaster and journalist reveals the story behind Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, visiting the National Gallery to examine the world-renowned painting created by a tormented artist who died when he was just 37.

Marr tells the barely believable tale of talent, loneliness and tragic heartbreak behind Van Gogh’s iconic work, uncovers the clues in it that reveal the darkness that ultimately consumed the man who created it and the part this painting was to play in the tragic story of his death.

Italia '90 – Return to Turin (BBC1, 10.20pm)

FOR those of us of a certain age, it’s hard to believe 30 years have gone by since one of the most memorable Fifa World Cups of all time. Even those of us who wouldn’t normally give two hoots about football were swept up in the laughter and more memorably the tears of that contest. And summing up the majesty of those heady days was Luciano Pavarotti’s rendition of Nessun Dorma, which was a glorious soundtrack to footballing stages of Rome, Milan, Naples and Turin. Here’s a chance to look back at those days, or experience them for the first time.

David Bowie: Finding Fame (BBC2, 9.15pm)

THIS is the David Bowie story you don’t know. The story of how David Robert Jones became David Bowie, how David Bowie became Ziggy Stardust and how Ziggy became immortal, changing the musical landscape as he did so. The story that finally makes sense of one of the greatest icons of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Part three of Francis Whately’s Bowie trilogy. The film shows many of the ideas that originated during these early years and features never-seen-before archive interviews with some of Bowie’s earliest collaborators.
