A SCOTS software company has developed new tools to help transport clean, green energy from the south-west of Scotland to elsewhere in the country.
The solution that Glasgow-based Smarter Grid Solutions created for SP Energy Networks will offer significant benefits from customers in Dumfries and Galloway – including reduced energy costs – as the excess green power produced there can be redistributed, reducing the need and cost of other generation methods. It will also reduce the time it takes to add new connections to the network, delivering on the Scottish and UK Government’s net-zero aspirations.
The system will calculate in real time the level of spare capacity on the network – reducing disconnections and better managing the network capacity and enabling more local low carbon generation connections to the network.
Scott Mathieson, SP Energy Networks director of network planning and regulation, said: “Thanks to the fantastic renewable resources available across Dumfries and Galloway, combined with the levels of demand across the region, south-west Scotland is the perfect place to trial this innovative technology.
“It has the potential to double the region’s export capacity and enable large amounts of new green energy to be generated in the local area. This is all focused on building a better future, quicker for our customers.”
The pioneering network of the future is being delivered in South West Scotland where a new active network management system will be integrated into its electricity transmission and distribution networks. The area was chosen because of its rich natural green energy resources and limited local demand.
