INCOMPETENT, out of touch and untrustworthy — that's the growing opinion about the Tories, according to a new poll.
Polling by YouGov published today reveals 43% of people view the Conservatives as incompetent (+16), 48% say they're out of touch (+11) and 47% rate them as untrustworthy (+11).
Meanwhile, 48% say the UK's ruling party is serving its own interests (+12), 32% regard it as weak (+18) and 53% say it "cares about only a select few" (+7).
The findings are published in today's edition of The Times and follow on from different poll results revealed by The Observer at the weekend.
That research, by Opinium, found Boris Johnson's net approval rating is now in the negative at -5% (-11) and 66% want him to sack Dominic Cummings.
And 43% say they have lost respect for the Tory government over its support for Cummings.
Kirsty Blackman, the SNP deputy Westminster leader, said: "It's now clear that the Dominic Cummings scandal has done serious damage to public confidence in the Tory government and its response to coronavirus.
"Boris Johnson must finally accept his responsibilities, remove Mr Cummings from post, and repair the harm he has done to public health.
"Mr Cummings must be held to account. There cannot be one rule for Tory advisers and another for everyone else. The longer the Prime Minister refuses to act the more people will view his government as incompetent, untrustworthy and out of touch — as this poll shows."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
