JUST one person is known to have the coronavirus in New Zealand after strict measures helped to suppress the virus.

The Pacific nation of less than five million people has recorded 22 deaths from Covid-19, and 1504 total cases overall.

Meanwhile the UK has had more than 270,000 confirmed cases and at least 38,000 deaths – that’s the official figure reported by the UK Government, but analysis from the ONS suggests the true death toll is higher than that at about 47,000.

New Zealand has limited the spread of the virus successfully through tough border controls and a quick lockdown. Just citizens and a small number of exceptions could enter the country before having to quarantine for two weeks at airport hotels.

This month schools have reopened, people can gather in groups of 100, and they can now travel outside of their local area.

The country’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has received praise for her leadership during the crisis, and now eyes will be on her handling of the economic recovery.
