1(Don’t ) Come a little bit closer … we know where the music is playing. The one and only Neil Young is keeping it in the family with his Fireside Sessions – his wife will be filming while he gives a live concert from his living room, by the fire.Young is promising a “down-home production, a few songs, a little time together”, which sounds good to me. Find out more via the Neil Young website, see link below. https://bit.ly/2zJeU9j
2Smile Smile Smile. Angel eyes himself, my old pal from Clydebank Marti Pellow (pictured below, right) is having quite the revival. Marti is doing a wee “live from lockdown” sesh every week on Facebook, getting more than 100,000 views every week as he belts out all his hits and does requests and answers questions and gives a shout-out to listeners. I think a whole new generation of fans will be (rightly) queuing round the block to see Marti live when this is over. A thoroughly likeable guy doing a great turn in his bedroom in mismatched jammies. https://bit.ly/2WcH9F4
3If what you want is to hear a soothing voice in these uncertain times, then you should head over to Norah Jones’s Facebook page. Jones is performing live every week, most recently with a series of Willie Nelson covers to mark the great man’s birthday. The streams are Thursday nights at 10pm. Enough time to get tore into the vino after the clap. https://bit.ly/2Ynf7JD
4Feel like banging your head off a wall? How about a bit of head-banging instead? Rock Gods Metallica have launched a new concert series, #MetallicaMondays, which will see the band stream a complete Metallica live show on the group’s YouTube channel and on Facebook every week. They start at midnight every Friday night and are available to stream all week. https://bit.ly/35l72GS
5The Boiler Room is where it’s all at, from Pussy Riot to Janelle Monae and everything in between. Boiler Room has been quick to pull together a Streaming From Isolation series of broadcasts. Look out for regular live shows and classic sets from previous years. There are a huge number of streams going live, so it’s already a massive resource of live DJ sets and performances. I recommend Pussy Riot … so pink balaclavas at the ready. https://bit.ly/3f8rM9p
6If musicals are more your thing, you can watch a different one from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s extensive back catalogue each Friday on YouTube. From Jesus Christ Superstar to Cats to ... This week features a sort of greatest hits compilation. All filmed live at the Royal Albert Hall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AONIXETJ7n8
7Look at the stars, look how they stream for you and all the things you do … and it was all mellow (except Metallica ... oh, and Pussy Riot). Mr Coldplay himself Chris Martin bumbles his way charmingly through sing-song sessions from his living room. For the past decade, Coldplay have been filling stadiums so there is plenty of material for somewhat tech-challenged Martin’s home-streaming half hour. Fix You always makes you cry. I newly love Chris. You will too. Check it out at https://bit.ly/2KQMOvg
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
