THE National is one again hitting the road to bring Scotland’s only independence-supporting daily newspaper to our readers in their own local areas.
Uniquely among Scottish daily newspapers, we don’t just seek the views of our readers, The National actively goes looking for them.
Since the second anniversary of the National’s foundation our editor Callum Baird has been tirelessly touring the country, accompanied by our hugely popular columnist the Wee Ginger Dug, ably assisted by his human Paul Kavanagh.
There’s a slight change of panel for the next National Roadshow which takes place next Wednesday, March 11, in Stirling. Organised by Stirling University Scottish Nationalist Association, Stirling Scottish Socialist Party Society and University of Stirling Students for Independence, the roadshow will be in the University’s Cottrell Building, Lecture theatre 1A, from 7pm.
Founding editor of The National and now editor of the Sunday National, Richard Walker will be guest speaker at the roadshow which is free to attend, though please register your attendance at Eventbrite.
Wee Ginger Dug started out as a blog by Paul Kavanagh and as well as his column he continues to write his blog which is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring regular fillips for the Yes Movement.
Paul writes it as he sees it, and here’s a sample from his latest blog.
“It’s a simple administrative procedure to give EU migrants to Scotland a tax code and NI number which is Scotland specific and which would not entitle them to live and work in the rest of the UK...
“The fiasco of the Conservatives’ changes to immigration policy tells us all we need to know about the way in which the UK is incapable of meeting Scotland’s needs. Scotland’s economy is to be trashed because it’s far more important to the Conservatives that they send a political message to their support base in England.
“You know, the kind of people who go on Question Time to rant about immigrants and who read the Express and nod along in AGREEMENT with the random CAPITALISATION in reports about PATRIOTIC breakfasts. Racism runs deep within the Conservatives. “A Scottish Conservative recently told a French born SNP politician to go back to where he came from...
“The economic prospects of Scotland are less important to this Conservative government than pandering to a racist rant on Question Time and the constant flood of racist scare stories in the right wing press.
We need independence because that’s the only way in which Scotland will get a government which has Scotland’s needs and interests as its sole priority. Ensuring that happens ought to be our first priority.”

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
