SOMEWHERE in and around Glasgow there are at least 100 people who are now better informed about the scandal of the 1974 McCrone Report.

The report was suppressed by UK governments for 30 years because it showed how much better off an oil-rich independent Scotland would be. On their regular Thursday stall in Argyle Street, Glasgow Pensioners for Independence gave out 100 copies of the special “McCrone Report” edition.

The papers had been bought by group member Marlene Halliday and taken into the stall by her colleague Valerie Gauld.

Sheena Stephen from the stall team said they were “extremely well received by the public”. Mary McCabe, co-convener of Pensioners for Independence, said: “We gave away 100 copies of the National to passers-by, most of whom accepted it with interest.

“Amongst these 100 people there are bound to be several to whom the story of the suppressed McCrone Report will be a shocking revelation.”
