PARTS of Scotland could be hit today and tomorrow by strong gale force winds gusting up to 75mph with travel disruption likely.

In addition, some areas will be affected by heavy rain and the combination of strong winds and rainfall will make driving conditions treacherous.

The Met Office has issued a yellow “be aware” warning for two large areas of the country. One of these areas stretches from the Firth of Clyde northwards to the Outer Hebrides and the other area spreads south from the Firth of Forth through East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. The warning will come in to force overnight and last for most of tomorrow with the winds not dying down completely until Wednesday or even Thursday.

The Met Office stated: “Strong southwesterly winds are expected for parts of Scotland and northern England on Tuesday. Gusts of 50–60mph are likely, with 70–75mph gusts around some of the most exposed coastal and upland sites.”

The windy conditions will mean some disruption in places. The Met Office said to expect “some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport”.

Its predictions include: “Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer. Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.

“Some short term loss of power and other services is possible. It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.”

Forecasts of widespread snow across Britain have been dismissed by the Met Office, but snow is expected on higher ground in northern Scotland.

The rain will persist and flood warnings are already in place for many parts of England with river and groundwater levels already high ahead of the anticipated rainfall.
