WITH its bright yellow paint job and pro-indy illustrations, it is well-known in the local area.

Now police are investigating after a campaign vehicle used by Dundee West MP Chris Law is in need of repairs after being damaged in a vandalism incident.

The minibus, which bears the well-known “Spirit of Scotland” illustration by artist Stewart Bremner, is routinely parked outside the MP’s Lochee office.

Police were called to the Marshall Street premises yesterday after Law’s staff were alerted to a smashed window on the side of the vehicle. Glass was strewn across the interior as a result and a temporary board has been fixed to the smashed panel, pending proper repairs.

A source close to Law, a former businessman, said the incident is not thought to be politically motivated. However, the MP said he was “saddened” by the incident, which happened just off the Coupar Angus Road.

He stated: “I am disappointed and saddened that the Dundee SNP minibus has been targeted by vandals.

“There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour.

“We should all aim for a better politics where people on all sides are treated with respect, and which does not resort to mindless vandalism.”

The personalised minibus is the second such vehicle to be associated with Law, who rose to prominence during the indyref period when he toured Scotland in a vintage “Green Goddess” fire engine as a Yes activist.

Named “Spirit of Independence”, it attracted £30,000 in campaign donations. Law and other volunteers spent 40 days and nights on the nationwide tour in what he describes as an endeavour of “biblical” proportions. Last summer he told The National: “I didn’t envisage how important that campaign was going to be.

"All I knew was I wanted to play my part. We were dealing with a 60-year-old vehicle, and you can’t cover Scotland in a straight line, you have to zig-zag. It was a huge effort.”
