AS the drama was unfolding on Thursday night into Friday morning, we asked you to get in touch to give us your reactions the General Election result. Here’s what you sent us:
I celebrate the results from the General Election and the message we have sent is loud and clear about our desire for self determination. Let’s not kid ourselves though that this result will be welcomed with open arms by the new UK Government or in any way respected. The days of UK governments having any respect for Scotland, or any respect for anyone other than their natural power base have long gone.
I now wait to see the attitude towards us from what is likely to be the most reactionary, right-wing government in living memory.
Remember, Brexit is all about “taking back control”. That being the case, how long before the forces of oppression in Westminster, the State, the BBC et al, see the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament itself as a block to that control.
We’ve already had a power grab from the Scottish Parliament with a “sunset clause” (on which the sun will never set). How long before they decide that devolution is unnecessary and irrelevant and attack the devolution settlement itself? There have already been hints at this during the campaign.

I celebrate the result but do not believe that the struggle for independence is anywhere near over. In fact, the struggle to retain what we have and advance from there is only just beginning.

I was worried the SNP would not reach the magic 50 seats bar and felt Boris would reach his bar code capitalist majority with the help of the English working class and I am never wrang. I knew Corbyn was a ditherer and would meet a ditherers’ fate, facing two ways on a full English Brexit and would be trapped, like a directionless, frightened rabbit, not knowing which way to jump, between the Leave/Remain buses. For once, Ducktail, on the telly chatterer’s panel, was right on that issue,
The sneaky wee Owen MacJones perties in Scotland and groups, who abstained and worked for North British Labour, met the same fate and were knocked doon by the North British, anti-SNP, London campaign buses in Scotland. This was undoubtedly an independence-fought issue in Scotland, which they spectacularly loast.
Boris may defy world opinion from an observer’s point of view, by denying a Section 30 order. So do we need it, if the Scottish Parliament votes for its own powers to hold a referendum, or even dare go further?

Delighted with how Scotland voted. But so sorry that we have lost Stephen Gethins.
Some reflection needed now and answers on the obstacles to Independence and roadblocks to the EU as described by the Opposition.
Keep up the good work National!

I think its great result but I’m disappointed to see the Tories managed to hang on to seats in the north-east of Scotland.
We must push it now even if that means court action.
Please, please Nicola push with all your might.
We are so proud of all our team SNP.
Thank you for all your efforts.

Fantastic result for the SNP, despite the barrage of lies and propaganda from the British media and the lying Tories, Labour and Lib Dems. We need to expand alternative media production big time in Scotland for indyref2. If we have this then we can counter the garbage and lies that gets thrown at us every day. Get in touch!

No-deal Brexit it is then, we are out of Europe on January 31. This is what he wanted and English voters have handed him the permission on a silver platter. We truly need to get moving on independence as soon as possible before the Scottish NHS is sold out from under us and our Parliament is dissolved.

Over the moon for us (SNP), gutted that so many people voted for BoJo. I honestly think they vote for that vacuous grin of his and don’t read up on his history. However, I’m sure many will live to regret it.
Let’s hope the SNP and our allies (if any), will manage to move forward and thwart any evil aims he has for Bonnie Scotland and her people.
Thanks National, for all your support. Brilliant.

If anyone needed proof that FPTP elections are not democratic, this was it.
The Tories increased their vote by 1.2% and went from a minority government to a landslide victory, with only 43.6% of the vote.
We will be leaving the EU under the Tory deal, despite the fact the majority (about 55%) voted for parties opposed to it.
So it looks as though Scotland will be governed by the nasty party for the next 5-10 years unless we escape.
I am English and moved to Scotland 10 years ago to get away from Westminster rule. Please Scotland do not let me down again as you did in 2014.

What does it take to convince Scots that it is time to uncouple the English yoke. To be free of the subordination we have suffered for too long. Do you really want the Boris Johnston gang to control yours and your children’s destiny? Are you just too afraid? It’s time to open your eyes and see what your future can be. Not the same old, same old.
Are you prepared to be denied by a fool? Accept the constraints of a government you didn’t elect? If India could have independence, why can’t we? Step-up, raise your hand, have courage.

The success of the SNP campaign in the face of a Tory landslide should send a clear and unmistakable message to Westminster that Scotland has but one option available to us and that is for Independence. We need to protect the National Interest of this country and the people that live here.

We did not vote for a Tory government to dictate how we go about our business and there is absolutely no reason why they should be allowed to. If a section 30 order is blocked, our choice then must be to make an internationally recognised UDI.
We are Big enough, Strong enough and Bold enough to make a success of it. It is our Challenge to meet and OUR right to meet it on OUR terms.

Sturgeon is now going to replace Corbyn as the demon-in-chief for the Tory establishment & their media to denigrate at every opportunity.

Great news for the SNP in gaining so many more seats.
Not so good for the UK as a whole and the fact that Scotland will now be dragged out of Europe against its democratic will.

I am delighted to see the SNP sweep the board almost clean, and that we have a new, strengthened mandate for independence. I am also proud of the Scots for, to a great extent, rejecting the parochialism and disregard for human suffering which the Conservative party offers to the populace.
On the other hand, I am horrified at the prospect of 5 years of Boris Johnson’s government, and what it
will mean for human rights, public services, the less privileged and our planet. He has already shown that he has no regard for any understood norms of public life and democracy – I am worried about what our neighbours in the rest of the UK are visiting upon themselves, and also for what he may do to the devolution settlement in an effort to stymie Scottish self-determination.
One thing is crystal clear, Scotland is on a completely different journey from the rest of the UK, and over the short or long term, we will be free of Westminster rule and able to develop into a forward-looking, progressive country fit to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Great result – especially when the entire Tory campaign was based almost entirely as a vote against indyref2. We are in Stirling and over the past five days have received daily leaflets from the Tories extolling the need to stop independence. The 9000+ majority for Alyn Smith says it all!

In my opinion, Scotland and the rest of the UK are now on a completely different path and it is surely now
time for us to take charge of our own affairs. The problem is that Boris Johnson is likely to block a new independence referendum, so how do we get round that? Also, if we are to persuade the No voters, we need to
spell out, in fine detail, just how we would finance things such as better pensions and how we would attract the required investment in an independent Scotland.
There is a lot of work needed to be done, but I trust Nicola to do it.

Congratulations to Robert Leslie for raising the SNP vote in Orkney and Shetland.
This was no mean feat in a constituency that still votes for the ghost of Joe Grimond.
The SNP and Scottish Greens both need to work ever harder on gaining the support of younger Scottish voters.
Leaving the EU and the climate emergency will have a massive effect on the lives of younger Scots. Both parties need to have a coherent vision and plan for both issues and be prepared to work together to deliver policies beginning today, as time is truly of the essence.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
