LIB DEM leader Jo Swinson has been defeated in East Dunbartonshire, with the SNP’s Amy Callaghan winning the constituency by just 149 votes.

Less than six weeks ago the party chief had insisted she could be the next Prime Minister.

But the voters in Bearsden and Milngavie had other ideas. Incredibly, the Lib Dems gained votes in every seat in Scotland bar the one Swinson was standing in.

It's been reported that she will now stand down as leader.

It was a disastrous night for the Lib Dems across the UK. They went into the election defending 21 seats, but the party look set to win significantly less.

Many in the party pinned the blame on Swinson’s decision to make revoking Article 50 the key promise of their election campaign.

There were some victories for the party. Wendy Chamberlain took North East Fife off the SNP’s Stephen Gethins, and Christine Jardine kept hold of her Edinburgh West seat.

Speaking at the count in Bishopbriggs, Swinson said: "These are very significant results for the future of our country and I will be making further remarks later today.

"But let me say now, for millions of people in our country these results will bring dread and dismay and people are looking for hope.

"I still believe we as a country can be warm and generous, inclusive and open and that by working together with our nearest neighbours we can achieve so much more.

"Liberal Democrats will continue to stand up for these values that guide our Liberal movement - openness, fairness, inclusivity. We will stand up for hope."

Callaghan told BBC Scotland: "It's quite a momentous achievement, both for me personally but also in terms of the people of East Dunbartonshire, completely rejecting the politics of austerity and also giving the people a chance to choose their own future, I think that is incredibly important."
