IN his most drastic move to avoid media scrutiny yet, Boris Johnson retreated into a fridge to escape a TV interview.

The Prime Minister was approached by Good Morning Britain producer Jonathan Swain during a campaign visit to a milk delivery company in Yorkshire.

He asks: “Morning prime minister, would you come on Good Morning Britain, prime minister?”

Johnson’s press secretary Rob Oxley could be heard mouthing “oh for f*** sake” in response, drawing gasps from hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid in the studio.

Pressed by Swain, Johnson replies “I’ll be with you in a second” and walks off, before Morgan notes “he’s gone into the fridge”.

Johnson walks inside a fridge stacked with milk bottles with his aides. One onlooker says: “It’s a bunker.”

Swain says he was pushed by one of the PM’s staff. “I’ve just had a reaction from one of the minders. OK, no need to push, thank you very much,” he says.

According to reports, the Tories insisted Oxley’s cursing was “a general expression of frustration and was not aimed at the journalist”.

The party is also said to have filed a formal complaint about Good Morning Britain’s conduct, though it was not clear who the complaint was made to.

Tweeting about the incident, Morgan wrote: "Cowardice is never a good look..."

He later added: "Right place for a bottle-job."
