THE First Minister has hit out at LibDem leader Jo Swinson after she said she would use nuclear weapons if she were prime minister.

During the ITV Election Interview, Swinson was asked if she would ever be prepared to use the UK's nuclear defence system. She responded simply "yes" to the question.

The interview praised the leader for her "brilliant short answer".

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament called Swinson's answer "disgraceful".

Reposting the clip on Twitter, the SNP leader added: "It’s sickening to hear this question asked and answered as if it’s some kind of virility test and without any context. Using nuclear weapons would mean killing millions of people. Those consequences should be made clear. (FWIW - and for that reason - my answer is ‘no’)."

The East Dunbartonshire candidate also drew criticism for discussing her plans for the environment right after making the comments.
