ELIUD Kipchoge became the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours yesterday in Vienna, Austria. The athlete completed 26.2 miles in a record-breaking one hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

Kipchoge said: “This shows no-one is limited.

“Now I’ve done it, I am expecting more people to do it after me.”

The four-time London Marathon winner crossed the finish line to a roaring crowd.

He ran behind a pace car which shined lasers on the road which indicated the pace he needed to maintain to set the record.

Assisting him was a team of 42 pacemakers including Olympic champions such as Matthew Centrowitz (1500m) and 5000m silver medallist Paul Chelimo.

It will not, however, be recognised as the official world record because it was not an open competition. That record is still 2:01:39.
