LEGISLATION to reform transport in Scotland, including a move to give councils the ability to introduce controversial workplace parking charges, has been approved by MSPs.

The Transport (Scotland) Bill passed by 56 votes to 29, with 18 abstentions. It came after MSPs considered hundreds of amendments to the legislation in a seven-hour session at Holyrood on Wednesday.

A last-ditch bid to remove the parking levy was defeated by SNP and Green MSPs – with Labour, the Conservatives and the LibDems all having voted for it to be removed.

Transport Secretary Michael Matheson took to Twitter to herald the Bill’s passage, writing that it is “an ambitious piece of legislation that will assist in delivering a cleaner, smarter and more accessible transport system in the years ahead”.
