FREEZING temperatures followed by 60mph winds are forecast as the remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo passes over the UK.

The Met Office is warning of transport disruption and power cuts as one of the strongest hurricane to have been recorded this far east of the Atlantic makes landfall.

It said the storm, which is due to hit Northern Ireland today, is expected to bring heavy rain and wind speeds of up to 60mph in coastal areas.

Heavy rain and high winds have been forecast in Scotland, with western areas more likely to be affected.

Scotland’s mountains are due to “accumulate snow on the highest ground”, according to Met Office forecaster Steven Keates.

The remnants of the hurricane are predicted to move away from the UK tomorrow night, although it will still be wet and windy throughout the weekend.

The hurricane has already powered across the Atlantic Ocean, lashing the Azores with heavy rain, powerful winds and high waves, and significantly damaging one island's main port.

The Azores Civil Protection Agency said the Category 2 hurricane felled trees and power lines as it passed just west of the Portuguese island chain.

The storm is expected to weaken to Category 1 as it hits the UK.
