Heats take place on the track in the men’s 100m, 5000m and 400m hurdles, and women’s 800m and 3000m steeplechase. Meanwhile, in the field, qualifying takes place for the men’s long jump and triple jump, and the women’s hammer, pole vault and high jump.

Inside the Vatican (BBC2, 9pm)

THE second of two programmes in which cameras record the inner workings of the Vatican over the course of a year. One of the most important tools of reform the Pope possesses is his power to appoint new cardinals. It’s the closest he gets to succession planning, because the cardinals will elect the new Pope at the next conclave. Here, Pope Francis selects 14 new cardinals, breaking with tradition by choosing men outside the centres of power. As the pontiff prepares to make a first papal visit to Ireland, the Church is rocked by a report alleging the cover-up of sex abuses by priests, dating back decades.

Inside Air Force One: Secrets of the Presidential Plane (C5, 9.15pm)

IT is the call-sign given to any aircraft carrying the US president, however it is most commonly associated with the Boeing 747s (there are two of them) that fly the president to major world events. Dubbed the “White House in the sky”, Air Force One flew John F Kennedy on his ill-fated trip to Dallas in November 1963, and transported his body back to Washington following the assassination. Meanwhile, on 9/11, President George W Bush was kept airborne on Air Force One for hours, with pilot Mark Tillman constantly on alert for a midair terrorist attack. This programme takes viewers inside the famous aircraft, with former chief steward Howie Franklin revealing the favourite meals enjoyed by the leaders (for Ronald Reagan it was macaroni and cheese, George Bush Snr barbecued meat, and Donald Trump it’s fast food).
