LIBDEM leader Jo Swinson has dismissed as “ludicrous” a claim by a Labour frontbencher that her party was “kind of Taliban” by calling for Brexit to be abandoned rather than holding a second referendum.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry said the approach was anti-democratic, telling The House magazine: “The LibDems have gotten kind of Taliban, haven’t they? They’ve said they’re just going to revoke, there’s not going to be another referendum.

“I don’t think it’s very democratic to seek to overturn a referendum without asking the people first.”

Her comments ahead of the Labour party conference came after Swinson vowed to immediately revoke Article 50 if her party gained power.

Swinson replied: “Comparing a UK political party to the Taliban is ludicrous. Emily is the shadow foreign secretary, and should use language that reflects the importance of that role.”
