Britain At Low Tide (C4, 8pm)
PALEOBIOLOGIST Tori Herridge and her team investigate the coastline of Scotland, uncovering archaeological finds that have been left behind by the tide in the inner reaches of the Firth of Forth. Herridge also uncovers the story behind a long-forgotten harbour that is regarded as the birthplace of the Scottish whisky industry.
Nomad: In The Footsteps Of Bruce Chatwin (BBC2, 9.45pm)
WHEN writer and adventurer Bruce Chatwin was dying, he asked his friend and collaborator, the director Werner Herzog, to view his recent film about tribesmen of the Sahara. He then gave Herzog his rucksack, which accompanied him on travels around the world, as a parting gift. Now, 30 years later, the filmmaker behind Fitzcarraldo and the documentary Grizzly Man is taking the rucksack on a new journey, inspired by his and Chatwin’s shared passion for the nomadic life. It’s a mission that takes place in Patagonia, the Black Mountains of Wales and the Australian outback as Herzog uncovers stories about dinosaurs, lost tribes and Aboriginal traditions, and explores what inspires humans to wander.
Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, 7pm)
WE had the launch show, followed by a programme devoted to the professional dancers, but now it’s finally time for the celebrities to staaaaaart dancing in earnest as the first live show arrives. It was difficult to assess the celebrities’ form in their group dance during the launch (although sadly it all proved too much for Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Laing, who sustained an injury and had to drop out to be replaced by former Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher). However, the bookies are expecting big things from CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual and EastEnders’ Emma Barton, who some seasoned Strictly watchers will be hoping will waltz Anton Du Beke to his first ever win. But will the judges agree as the 15 couples take to the floor?
Pointless Celebrities (BBC1, 6.10pm)
ALEXANDER Armstrong and Richard Osman invite another selection of famous faces to take part in the quiz. As always, the challengers are tasked with coming up with the least likely correct answers to a series of questions. Tonight, the contestants come from the world of journalism, as columnist Owen Jones, writer and broadcaster Paris Lees, Sky News’ Kay Burley and Adam Boulton, TV personality Carole Malone, journalist and critic Quentin Letts, BBC media editor Amol Rajan and presenter Victoria Derbyshire take part.
Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions (STV, 8.30pm)
Ant and Dec present a special version of the talent show, in which stars from the past 13 series of Britain’s Got Talent compete against winners from versions of the programme from around the world to impress the viewers and judges.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
