Proms Encore (BBC2, 7pm)
KATIE Derham presents the classical music magazine show to accompany the BBC Proms, from a bandstand directly opposite the Royal Albert Hall. This evening she explores the role of the conductor, with the help of leading maestros Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, Peter Edwards and Lloyd Coleman. Lloyd also discusses conducting styles with Martyn Brabbins, the music director of the English National Opera. Plus, comedian and keyboard player Rachel Parris finds out what it is like to play Queen Victoria’s own piano with Stephen Hough.
Secrets of the Royal Train (C5, 8pm)
AS you might have deduced from the title, this is the inside story of the trains used by the monarchy for more than 150 years, from its lavish past as the royal express of excess to the present Queen’s mobile ‘home from home”. There’s a glimpse inside Queen Victoria’s luxurious carriage with its 23-carat gold paint and precious silks. The mod cons, including the first onboard toilet ever installed, would revolutionise the way she travelled across the country. Cameras also follow staff who have served on the train for many years, from the foreman who accidentally walked in on the Queen in her nightgown, to the 86-year-old signalman who encouraged Diana, Princesss of Wales to play jokes on his friends.
Hidden Britain by Drone: Heatwave Special (C4, 8pm)
ONE of the hottest summers ever has generated a lot of interest for Britain’s aerial archaeologists. These drone operators have uncovered major new finds emerging from the parched landscape. In this edition of the engaging series, Tony Robinson investigates how 2019’s dry spell created perfect conditions for the mysterious ‘parch marks’ that led to these discoveries. He chats to the archaeologists and drone pilots that have been flying all over the country to record this phenomenon.
Below the Surface (BBC4, 9pm)
AS series two of Kasper Barfoed’s gripping Danish thriller continues, a furious Yusuf has a go at June and Philip when he discovers she has not given him her correct mobile number. Meanwhile, Rami’s behaviour becomes increasingly reckless. Stay tuned for episode six which follows straight after. The plot thickens when a woman’s body is discovered in the forest with June’s fingerprints on the murder weapon, and Yusuf uses Philip’s phone to demand a plane. The excellent cast includes Johannes Lassen.
William & Harry: Princes at War? (C5, 9pm)
IS there a rift between the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, or has it been blown out of proportion by the media? This programme, which may add fuel to that fire, analyses how William and Harry’s sibling relationship has changed over the years, beginning from the bond formed by their mother’s death 22 years ago.
