When I saw the words written down I thought "no chance". It's a joke. A very funny joke, actually. But slowly it sank in. Today is the day satire died, as it is the day TOMMY ROBINSON attempted to claim ASYLUM in the United States of America.
Just take a second to let that sink in. Tommy Robinson, who campaigns on the ideology that refugees and asylum seekers are "invading Europe". Tommy Robinson, who claims our children's futures are at risk from uncontrolled immigration. Tommy Robinson, who has a criminal record with convictions for several offences, including football-related violence and trying to travel on false documents. Tommy Robinson, who has been to prison a number of times including in 2014 for mortgage fraud. Tommy Robinson, who now faces further jail time after being found in contempt of court.

This threat of further jail time is the reason why Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is seeking asylum in the US. In an interview with Info Wars, the failed Ukip MEP candidate begged US President Donald Trump to grant him and his family asylum in the country ahead of his sentencing later this week.

"I feel like I'm two days away from being sentenced to death in the UK," he said.
"I beg Donald Trump, I beg the American government, to look at my case. I need evacuation from this country because dark forces are at work.
"This is a direct appeal on behalf of my family - we love the United States, I have no future here [in the UK]."
Robinson broadcast live footage from outside court on May 25, 2018, while the jury in the second of a series of linked grooming trials was considering its verdict.
A reporting restriction was in place which postponed the publication of any details of the case until the end of all the trials involving 29 people, in a bid to ensure all defendants received a fair trial.
Ah yes, ensuring people receive a fair trial ... sounds like very "dark forces" are at work Tommy ...
Well, let's just wait and see if Trump grants Robinson asylum. It wouldn't even be surprising tbh.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
