AN interactive route planner has been launched by walking and cycling charity Sustrans and VisitScotland to encourage people to explore one of the county’s most iconic long-distance cycling routes.

The Caledonia Way, which stretches 237 miles from Campbeltown to Inverness, attracts an estimated 25 million cycling journeys per year, helping to boost local economies.

The interactive planner lists multi-day touring itineraries and day-trip suggestions, showing how the route can be enjoyed by cyclists across a broad range of experience and ability.

By incorporating listings from VisitScotland’s business database, the map also helps cycle tourists to plan more of their journey by browsing local accommodation, visitor attractions, events and food and drink options in advance. It is anticipated that further routes will be added in the coming months. It is hoped that by combining Sustrans’ expertise as custodians of the National Cycle Network with VisitScotland’s domestic and international tourism reach, the initiative will inspire a wider audience to experience Scotland from a new perspective.

VisitScotland chief executive Malcolm Roughead said: “The Caledonia Way covers over 237 miles of stunning scenery from start to finish with lots of extra, diverse attractions along the way.”

Sustrans Scotland’s Tom Bishop said: “The Caledonia Way is undoubtedly a jewel in the crown of the National Cycle Network. We believe this innovative journey planner will encourage even more people to explore one of Scotland’s most breathtaking routes by bike.”
