D-Day 75: Return to the Beaches, BBC2, 6pm
THREE hundred veterans, aged between 90 and 105, board a ship to return to the D-Day beaches in Normandy. They were young men in 1944 when they took part in the largest seaborne landings ever mounted.
Some are returning for the first time, some for the last and they will remember the thousands who never came home. One veteran, Jack Mortimer, now 95, says he simply wants to do his duty and raise a salute to the real heroes, while other featured veterans include Ernie Pegg, who drove supply lorries and Ken Peppercorn, who was wounded and captured after the landings.
The Voice Kids, STV, 8pm
NEW series. Emma Willis presents the third series of the junior version of the singing talent contest, giving youngsters between the ages of seven and 14 their big chance of achieving stardom.
The Voice UK’s Will.i.am returns as one of the four coaches, with McFly’s Danny Jones and pop stars Pixie Lott and Jessie J occupying the other three spinning red chairs. Up for grabs this time is a £30,000 prize to contribute to the winning child’s musical education, along with a family holiday to Universal Orlando Resort.
Inspector Montalbano, BBC4. 9pm
IN Vigata, a diary is discovered, belonging to a boy, then aged 15, fascinated by fascist ideology. In its pages, the young man confesses to carrying out a massacre in September 1943. While the police try to shed light on the story in the notebook, a sprightly 90-year-old turns up, asking Salvo (Luca Zingaretti) to have his name removed from a war memorial.
Killing Eve, BBC1, 9.15pm
THE first season of this darkly funny thriller was a huge international hit, with leading ladies Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer winning a Golden Globe and a Bafta respectively. So, expectations are very high for the second run, which finally begins on BBC1 tonight. The action picks up where the first series left off – which, fans will remember, means that Eve (Oh) has just stabbed assassin Villanelle in the stomach.
Now, Eve is alone in the killer’s flat, wondering what to do next, while Villanelle, who has more experience with these sorts of situations, is already calling on her impressive survival instinct and skills to go on the run. If she can escape her Russian handlers, she intends to head for London.
Wentworth Prison, 5STAR, 10pm
THE Australian prison drama begins its seventh series. Following Drago’s death, Rita and Marie are at war, and as their personal vendettas spill out into the wider prison population, it is anyone’s guess as to who will prevail. Along with Will and Jake, the pregnant Vera seems to have had a lucky escape regarding the Freak’s death, but can their good fortune last? And, torn in all directions by the weight of their emotions, the rest of the prison’s rogues gallery struggle to keep it together.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
