TORIES have long been good at providing novel solutions to complex problems.
Improve the NHS? Cut the budget. Ensure Scots are safe? Keep nuclear submarines on their doorstep.
Tory MSP Maurice Golden has kept up his party’s noble tradition.
Foregoing more traditional methods of improving a country – you know, with policy proposals – Golden has an interesting idea.
He has proposed that the solution to Scotland’s current malaise, a “nationalist nightmare” to be specific, is to install the UK’s number one cheerleader, Ruth Davidson, as first minister.
Riding the crest of a Unionist wave after their stunning EU election success – in which the Scottish Tories won a staggering 11.6% of the vote – the choice of Davidson is an obvious one for Golden.

YouGove polling of Holyrood voting intentions from April was also incredibly encouraging for Davidson’s prospects, with her party forecast to win 22% of votes – a mere 24% behind the SNP.
Confident that he had identified the best candidate for the job, Golden tweeted: “The SNP have trapped Scotland in a nationalist nightmare – forever fighting the same damaging and divisive battles. The only way we are going to end this is by making @RuthDavidsonMSP First Minister.”

However, it seems “trapped” Scots, who of course voted for the SNP to govern Scotland, do not quite share Golden’s enthusiasm for his plan.
They made their feelings known with a deluge of comments ...

Not trapped when we keep voting for them! Trapped is having a Tory government we did not vote for

It's not the SNP - it's all the people who keep voting for them. You just need to get more votes than them. I think that's how it works. Some other policies might be a good start 👍

Not a nightmare @mgoldenmsp, an awakening to a brighter, fairer, more inclusive future. Time to drop the shackles of the Conservative Party, walk into the light and feel the warmth on your face. 😁

Well, we keep voting for them! The only ones trapping us in a nightmare are the Tories who refuse to listen to votes in 2016 and now only last week. I'll spare you the maps.... you'll have seen them!

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
