ANOTHER world first for Scotland’s renewables industry was confirmed yesterday with the news that a firm order has been placed for revolutionary floating wind turbines for the Kincardine project in the North Sea.
The announcement, made in Denmark yesterday, confirmed that MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has signed a contract with Spanish developer and construction company Cobra Group, part of the ACS Group, to provide five V164-9.5 MW turbines for the Kincardine floating offshore wind project.
This means Kincardine will be the first floating project in the world to feature wind turbines over 9 MW, a major step towards making floating wind turbines sustainable.
MHI Vestas stated: “With a maximum capacity of 50 MW Kincardine looks to set a new standard in floating offshore wind as the industry advances toward utility scale projects.”
Kincardine wind farm is located 15km south-east of Aberdeen Bay and already has a turbine installed.
MHI Vestas’ chief executive officer, Philippe Kavafyan, said: “We are exceptionally proud that the world’s largest floating offshore wind park will feature the V164-9.5 MW turbine.”
