Mothering Sunday is a time for fizzy bubbles whether you’re treating your mum or remembering her fondly with a perfectly chilled glass in front of you. I think (on this occasion) Champagne should be in order, and there are always a few I’d suggest.
You’ll certainly find attractive offers this week in merchants and supermarkets, but if you need a last minute recommendation for today you’d do well to head to Majestic. Although bear in mind the changes to the chain that have come to the fore this week. They will be closing a number of stores to focus on their online offering via Naked Wines, but you will still be able to order a fabulous range of exciting and well-priced wines going forwards.
Here are a few to seek out today…
For an elegant mum, try a bottle of Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Brut NV (Majestic, £42.99, or £32.23 in a mixed six pack). This is my favourite Champagne to kick off an evening, as it’s the perfect aperitif. It’s a lighter style of fizz, with an elegant, citrusy feel in the glass. It’s great with canapés, or smoked salmon.
For a classy mum, it’s the Taittinger Brut Réserve NV (Majestic, £38.99, or £29.23 in a mixed six pack). This is a brilliant, accessible Champagne that happily suits any occasion…especially if the occasion involves oysters.
For a more fabulous mum, it has to be Bollinger Special Cuvée Brut NV (Majestic, £45.99, or £34.47 in a mixed six pack). Bollinger is a more full-bodied style of Champagne with plenty of rich, yeasty notes on the nose and the palate. This is a wonderfully decadent Champagne to be enjoyed with pan fried scallops or even a lobster if you’re feeling particularly posh.
And for a glamorous mum, grab a Pol Roger Réserve Brut NV (Majestic, £45.99, or £34.47 in a mixed six pack). Pol Roger is lush, but dry and very food friendly. I love this one with a big plate of sushi.
Whichever Champagne you choose for Mothering Sunday, make sure you enjoy your glass, and the day. Cheers!
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
