A GRIEVING grandmother has urged her fellow National readers to be aware of the dangers of asthma.

IN a heartbreaking letter to the paper, Susan Campbell shared her shock at the death of her 17-year-old grandson, Alan MacDonald Campbell.

Earlier this month, the teenager died suddenly after a severe asthma attack.

“There is nothing in the world that prepares you for the death of a young person,” Campbell wrote in her letter. Until March 7, my worst nightmare was to imagine that one of my children would die before me.

"The death of a grandchild was beyond all imagining.”

In Scotland, 368,000 people are currently receiving treatment for asthma. This includes 72,000 children and 296,000 adults.

According to the most recent statistics, in 2017/2018 6209 people in Scotland were admitted to hospital with an asthma attack, of those 126 people died.

A spokesperson from Asthma UK, said: “This is a really tragic story and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. Sadly, in the UK three people die each day from an asthma attack.”

Campbell has set up a crowdfunder to raise money for Asthma UK to help with research into the condition and to raise awareness. National readers can donate to the fundraiser at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/susan-campbell30.
