THE plight of EU nationals in Scotland and the fact that this country is unable to determine its own immigration rules has sparked a major protest that will take place in Inverness on Saturday.

End London Rule – Inverness Grassroots Uprising (IGU) have organised a march through the capital of the Highlands which is aimed at showing solidarity with EU citizens living here.

Neil Davidson is the main organiser of the Scotland Standing Up For Our Citizens march on Saturday, and it is already clear that hundreds – and perhaps thousands – of people intend to take part.

Davidson told The National: “This march is more aimed against Brexit and to highlight that Scotland is about to be dragged out of the EU against the will of the majority of our citizens.

“It is also a march to stand up for all our citizens who will be affected by this undemocratic scenario.”

The organisers together added: “As soon as the 19th of September arrived in 2014, the day after the Scottish independence referendum, we all witnessed how London rule strips us of our rights to live in a democracy.

“And as we have all witnessed, we are about to be dragged out of the EU against the will of the majority of Scottish citizens.

“In the BritNat-run EU referendum in June 2016 they would not even allow any of our highly valued EU citizens to vote nor our

16 to 18 year olds.

“Yet despite that Scotland still voted to stay in the EU with 62%. Extensive polls recently put that figure above 70%.

“Please join our march in the Highland Capital on March 23. Let’s stand up for democracy with one voice. Scotland can and will take our destiny back into our own hands as this is the only way we will have a true democracy.”

Details of the march can be found at the event’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/events/251620185768228.

Davidson confirmed yesterday that he has received notification from Highland Council that the march can go ahead.

It will start and end in Bught Park, gathering at 1.45pm and setting off at 2.30pm sharp.

The route goes from Bught Park to Bught Road, Ness Walk, Bishops Road, Ardross Terrace, Ness Walk, Ness Bridge, Castle Road, Ness Bank, Cavell Gardens, Haugh Road, View Place, Castle Street, High Street, Bridge Street, Ness Bridge, Ness Walk, Ardross Terrace, Bishops Road, Ness Walk, Bught Road and back to Bught Park

The organisers say: “Bring your friends, colleagues, relatives and also your banners, your flags, your pipes, drums and any other musical instruments.”
