DAVID Mundell has bemused social media users by describing the worst-ever defeat by any UK government as "disappointing".
In an interview with STV, The Scottish Secretary rejected suggestions that the Prime Minister should resign despite Jeremy Corbyn tabling a vote of no confidence in her government.
He insisted that May's withdrawal agreement was not dead and that it would not be changed. The Tory also suggested that MPs could be convinced to vote for it if they were provided with "clarifications" and assurances".
Mundell said: "Of course the result of the vote tonight is disappointing. I think it was the right deal. I think members across the House will realise that we have to leave the EU with a deal.
"The Prime Minister set out what needs to happen next. We'll listen to the House - we have to, it's an emphatic result. But we'll reach out to parliamentarians across the House and try to find a way forward on the basis of a deal that allows an orderly ex...Brexit to deliver on the result of the referendum, to deliver actually on the votes of 80% of people in the 19...2017 general election."

When it was put to Mundell that another vote on the same deal was now surely out of the question, he said: "I think at the core is the withdrawal agreement that has been negotiated. That itself can't and won't be changed.
"But there are clearly assurances, clearly other clarifications people want in relation to that or indeed the future relationship [with the EU] and the Prime Minister will be discussing those with colleagues in our party, in the DUP, in the Labour Party and other parties in the House."

His response did not impress social media onlookers.
This is some of the most pathetic squirming you will ever see. https://t.co/8deOhztWN0

Mundell making no sense as usual #scotnight

#scotnight Surprise surprise Mundell ignoring questions, denying Scotland should take part in the future discussions, and that this deal stinks. Just like his attitude to Scotland really. What is he doing representing (or failing to) Scotland?

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
