THE SNP are today staging a second Day of Action with campaign activity across the country.

Calling on its huge membership to get involved, the party is mobilising its activists for the second time following the first Day of Action in September, with the emphasis on reaching out to those voters who may now be contemplating a Yes vote in the second independence referendum.

The Brexit fiasco at Westminster is sure to be a huge topic of conversation during the canvassing, leafleting, street stalls, public meetings and other activities all over Scotland, and the SNP has devised a Survey Card to test public opinion on Brexit and independence.

The card poses several questions: “How did you vote in the referendum on membership of the European Union in 2016? If there was a referendum on membership of the EU tomorrow, how would you vote now? How did you vote in the Scottish independence referendum of 2014? If there was a referendum on Scottish independence tomorrow, how would you vote on the question ‘Should Scotland be an independent country?’”

The list of events set up for today is extensive. For example, Eastwood SNP’s meeting point is outside Tesco in Clarkston. They say: “Please join us at any time between 10am and 12 noon. We will have a street stall, a food bank collection, Brexit related activity, and we will be out talking to voters.”

Helensburgh SNP have booked the gathering space in Helensburgh Parish Church from 10.30am to 1.30pm where Brendan O’Hara MP and Iain Shonny Paterson, Argyll and Bute councillor, will be joining them.

In East Lothian, local SNP activists have organised an event in the Prestoungrange Gothenburg in Prestonpans where the special guest is The National’s own Wee Ginger Dug accompanied by his master Paul Kavanagh.

Bathgate Retail Park will see local SNP members discussing “The Big Questions” with the people of Bathgate. They say: “We will have various message boards positioned throughout the precinct with topical questions: ‘What’s your thoughts on Brexit?’, ‘Should Universal Credit be halted?’ etc."

Dundee SNP will have a street stall and be canvassing in Lochee, meeting at 11am outside the old RBS next to the Poundstretchers on the High Street. They said: “We will be discussing independence with the public as part of the SNP’s National Day of Action.”

In Dunfermline, SNP members are holding a follow up to their “Scotland the Brand” leaflet run and there will also be the confirmation of Activate Data. Edinburgh North and Leith SNP’s campaign day will involve a street stall, door knocking and leafleting “to get the SNP message out across the constituency and engage with the public”.

At Leven in Fife, local SNP members will have a street stall on Leven High Street, and will also distribute leaflets and complete surveys. They are meeting in the High Street outside TSB by 11am, with any member new to canvassing very welcome.

Speaking ahead of today’s activity Keith Brown, the SNP’s depute leader, said: “The utter chaos of Brexit and the Tory party has been laid bare for all to see this week. The UK, as an entity, has rarely looked so volatile, fragmented and rudderless. The Tory Westminster Government wants to drag Scotland out of the EU against our will, but we didn’t vote for this shambles – and we aren’t prepared to accept it.

“So, as the second biggest political party in the UK in terms of members, we are mobilising our vast membership with a second day of action today. There will be a buzz of activity from Kirkwall to Kilmarnock today with door to door canvassing and street stalls in cities, towns and villages across the country.

“Our message will be a positive vision of hope for an independent Scotland – in contrast to the utter chaos of Westminster – this will also help ensure we are campaign ready.”
