THE most symbolic picture of this year’s Armistice commemoration for me was that of Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, united as one. It was both poignant and prophetic because of their recognition that they have had to come to terms with their history, make a real peace and leave the past in the past.
The British on the other hand, always insular in outlook, have decided to “go it alone”, even after the tremendous numbers of armed forces and civilians that have been killed in opposition to the concept of one nation lording it over another. This is what makes me despair of Westminster ever giving respect to the other three countries of the UK.
It isn’t going to happen while they see themselves as superior and above having to eat some humble pie now and again, eg returning to the EU in a spirit of brotherhood and co-operation. As one who supports the independence of Scotland because of the unacceptable attitudes of the government in the south-east, it might even encourage me to give them a second chance.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
