GLASGOW City Council leader Susan Aitken is right in recognising that that the People’s Palace and winter gardens (one institution not two) is a much-loved part of the city’s heritage.

But I do hope that Aitken and her committee when “considering sustainable options for this institution”, will take into account the Labour administration’s management of the building.

It does not surprise me that the enforced maintenance of the winter gardens carried out under Labour has been discovered to be inadequate.

The palace’s collections have been asset stripped but all major heritage spending has been concentrated in the west end at Kelvingrove, the Kelvinhall, Riverside, the Botanic Gardens, and of course currently at the re-fit of the Burrell.

Considering the past survival struggles it would be ironic if some unforeseen priority such as an overspend at the Burrell proved to be the final nail in the Palace’s coffin.
