SCOTLAND in Union is an “extremist” organisation, a former employee of the anti-independence campaign group has claimed.
Joe McCauley, a former volunteer co-ordinator also criticised Allan Sutherland, a regional organiser with the group, for his “outdated” views on same-sex marriage and climate change.
In a scathing post shared online, McCauley said: “One of my former colleagues supported a local authority’s decision not to fly the Pride flag. The same colleague also describes equality and climate change as non-issues. Sadly, he holds many outdated values, but he continues to be the representative for the organisation at public events.
“I’m very angry that Scotland in Union allows this to continue.
“This culture of extremism was one of the reasons that forced me to leave the organisation recently.”
A spokesman for Scotland in Union said: “These comments from a former employee are vigorously denied. Scotland in Union is a proud supporter of equality. We represent all those in Scotland who know that we are better off as part of the United Kingdom.”
It’s understood Sutherland, who last organised an event two weeks ago, no longer works for Scotland in Union.
He did not respond to The National’s requests for a comment.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
