Suzanne McLaughlin serves up a week of delights...
1 BOOKFACE, the brilliant online book group hosted by the lovely Heather Suttie, is a joy. Book recommendations (and those to reject), friendship making, bibliophile jokes and much more on the old Facebook. However the book group is going live with a bookshop brunch – a kind of swap shop for booklovers. The format of the brunches is this ... you book your slot at the restaurant – this time it’s at Glaschu in Glasgow’s Royal Exchange Square – turn up with four books you’re finished with, enjoy your brunch, blether and drink copious mimosas or coffees, and leave with four new books recommended by a new friend. This month is close to being a sell-out – so get in quick and join the group at www.facebook.com/groups/2714697788817368 to be sure to be first in the queue next time. To book brunch head over to Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bookface-book-swap-brunch-at-glaschu-tickets. The event is £25 and that includes Prosecco and brunch.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
