Here are the picks of tonight's TV...
Winter Walks (BBC4, 7.30pm)
OVER the course of four nights, BBC4 viewers will get a chance to join guest walkers as they explore dramatic landscapes with only a 360-degree camera for company. Our travelling companions for the rest of the series are Alastair Campbell, the Rev Kate Bottley and Nihal Arthanayake, but we begin with Amanda Owen, aka the Yorkshire shepherdess. She’s used to being out in the elements, and she’s also on familiar territory as she crosses hills and fields through Wensleydale and Raydale on her winter walk. Along the way, she meets up with fellow sheep farmers to talk about their shared occupation.
MasterChef: The Professionals (BBC1, 7.35pm)
IN the first of tonight’s two servings, four more professional chefs arrive in the kitchen, ready to try to impress Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace. The first two chefs get their chance to show off their skills when Marcus asks them to make a prawn, avocado and pepper omelette served with prawn oil. The experts will be expecting a flawless dish with an even colour and a smooth finish. The next two chefs are making chicken kofte served with flatbread and cucumber salad, all in 20 minutes.
The Truth About Your Chicken: Dispatches (Channel 4, 8.30pm)
WITH more than a billion chickens consumed each year in the UK, reporter Morland Sanders investigates the health and environmental impact of industrial food production. This undercover investigation asks serious questions about supermarket-sold chicken products, animal welfare, environmental standards, and the impact that these farming techniques may be having on the British countryside.
The Outlaws (BBC1, 10.35pm)
IN this final episode, Christian’s nemesis closes in on him, as the truth about their shared history is revealed to the outlaws. Meanwhile, as Frank starts to bond with his daughter Margaret, John risks ruining his relationship with his own dad, and Rani’s parents remind her of the importance of honouring one’s obligations. Greg is caught between a rock and a hard place, and Gabby and Myrna join in a rescue mission.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
