WHAT’S on my mind at the moment is the medieval nonsense that continues to be propagated by the English royal family, whereby one, by accident of birth, is called Your Majesty, and the next layer down, on a descending scale, are called His or Her Royal Highness.

It’s like something from the script of a Carry On film, and this nonsense has now been exported into Scotland, where the correct form for addressing a King or Queen of Scots is Your Grace, and is a much more fitting address for any century, past or present.

Even “Debrett’s Correct Form: Social and Professional Etiquette, Precedence and Protocol” has fallen into this trap, where only the English form is quoted. Yet another example of English attempts to use the current Union to neuter Scotland, and turn it into an English county. Scotland is a more ancient kingdom, country and nation than England, and is the oldest kingdom in Europe. As such we seek no deference from others, just the normal respect that is due to all free nations the world over.
