THE Israeli ambassador to the United Nations (UN) has torn up the UN charter in front of the general assembly ahead of a crucial vote regarding Palestine.

Gilad Erdan was seen using a mini paper shredder on the podium of the UN general assembly on Friday.

He placed the UN charter - the foundational treaty of the UN - in the shredder, before saying: “You are shredding the UN charter with your own hands.

“Yes, yes, that’s what you’re doing. Shredding the UN charter. Shame on you.”

The move came ahead of the UN general assembly voting in favour of granting new “rights and privileges” to Palestine, calling on the UN security council to reconsider its request to become a member state.

The resolution passed by 143 votes in favour to 9 against, with 25 abstentions.

On Thursday, in an interview with Israeli Channel 12 TV news, Erdan said that the decision by the US to pause a shipment of heavy bombs to Israel following concerns the weapons could be used to attack Rafah was "a very disappointing decision, even frustrating".

He suggested the move stemmed from political pressure on Biden from Congress, the US campus protests and the upcoming election.

When a similar vote in the UN was vetoed by the US last month, Erdan said the resolution was “disconnected to the reality on the ground”.

The resolution sought "to reward the perpetrators of these atrocities with statehood", Erdan said at the time, referring to the October 7 attack by Hamas.

It is now up to the security council to decide whether it will grant Palestine membership.
