MICHELLE Mone’s daughter has been blasted for going on a televised “poverty safari” of Glasgow’s East End.

Bethany Mone is to take part in Channel 4’s Born Famous, a reality TV show that puts the offspring of celebrities into deprived communities “to live the life they would have lived had their parents not found fame".

MP Alison Thewliss called it “despicable”, describing it as “exploitation” of the community. Lady Mone responded by calling the politician a “moron”.

The show had promised to send teens to the the communities where their “superstar parents grew up”, but Tobin is heading to Bridgeton rather than Dennistoun where her mum hails from.

Around 25% of people in Bridgeton live in income deprivation based on the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. In Dennistoun, it’s less than 15%, with the area having undergone a process of gentrification in recent years.

Channel 4's commissioning editor Emily Jones, said the show was about assessing the opportunities that exist for working-class children: “There is a myth that talent will out whatever the circumstances.

"Using extraordinary access so some of our most successful celebrities, Born Famous is a novel way to explore the degree to which we're all in denial about how hard it is to be young today.”

Thewliss disagreed. She tweeted: “Utterly despicable exploitation of a kind, close-knit community.

“No area deserves ‘poverty safari’ treatment, but particularly cruel of @MichelleMone to use East End roots to pick on Bridgeton, which has seen change led by local people, supported @clydegateway. @bridgeton_cc.”

Baroness Mone responded by blocking the MP on Twitter. She later tweeted: “I have to address some of the horrendous comments going around on social media [regarding] the new Channel 4 show I am partaking in.

“The rumours are frankly false gossip. My daughter Bethany has had an invaluable and overwhelmingly positive experience filming recently.

“It’s so disappointing that people have made a snap judgement on what the series is about and I hope they will reserve further judgement for when they are able to view it. After people watch it a lot of people will owe us a big apology.

“I have so much respect for my background, home and the people of Glasgow especially the East End which you’ll be able to see very soon. Another SNP moron opening their mouth again without knowing the facts and trying to cause trouble.”

In January, Mone directed the insult at SNP MP Stewart McDonald after he critcised her record in the Lords.

He tweeted: "Since becoming a Baroness and legislator – for which she is entitled to £300 per day – Ms Mone has submitted no questions to the Government and taken part in only two votes. Still, she’s sold some jewellery.”

Darren “Loki” McGarvey, whose book Poverty Safari recently won the Orwell Prize, tweeted: “If they want to ‘confront their feelings of privilege’, I’d be happy to have a chat with them. I know they might mean well, but class experiences can be so divergent that good intentions may appear extremely vulgar and patronising.”

The show is being made by Gordon Ramsay’s own production company Studio Ramsay. Previous shows by the firm include The F Word with Gordon Ramsay, Gordon Ramsay’s Great Christmas Roast and Gordon Ramsay on Cocaine.

Ramsay’s son Jack will also take part in the show, as will Ria Ince, daughter of former England football captain Paul Ince, and singer Mel B’s daughter Phoenix Chi.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron made Mone a Baroness in 2015.

One of her first votes in the House of Lords was to back a cut in tax credits.

Shortly afterwards, she tweeted: “If you really want something, really work hard, don’t look for excuses, be proactive, have a can do attitude and never ever give up, you will succeed.”

Mone has given just three speeches in the her time in the Lords.
