DUNDEE's bid to become the European Capital of Culture 2023 has been shattered after all UK cities were deemed to be no longer eligble because of Brexit.

The Scottish city launched its campaign to claim the title in October with a ceremony outside Caird Hall.

However, a letter now confirms that UK cities are no longer eligble to bid for the title.

Martine Reicherts, the director-general in the European Commision's education and culture department confirmed that, as the UK would be leaving the EU, UK cities would no longer be able to enter a bid.

Speaking to the Evening Telegraph, a spokeswoman said  “As one of the many concrete consequences of its decision to leave the European Union by 29 March 2019, the UK cannot host the European Capital of Culture in 2023.”

It was expected that the UK would announce today which city would be put forward as the country's representative, with Dundee facing competition from Nottingham, Leeds, Milton Keynes and Belfast.
